The Annual Women And Fair Trade Festival Essay - 1491 Words
On a crisp morning this past fall, cooperatives from around the world set up shop in an Austin, Texas, church for the annual Women and Fair Trade Festival. While most of the vendors were veterans of collective organizing, one group of single immigrant mothers used the festival to debut their food cooperative, Cooperativa Posada. Three Mexican womenââ¬âSilvia, Elideth, and Erikaââ¬âand a Guatemalan woman named Hilda spent a near-sleepless night preparing dozens of their distinct regional varieties of tamales, some wrapped in corn husks and others in moist banana leaves. Nebat, the lone Ethiopian member of the cooperative, prepared some luscious, dark, traditional Ethiopian coffee by roasting the beans on a metal plate over an open flame, then grinding them by hand. The products of their labor were not only nourishment for the festival attendees (who lined up for a taste), but also an attempt to raise the awarenessââ¬âand donationsââ¬âneeded for their cooperative to succeed. On a broader level, the tamales and coffee represented the mothersââ¬â¢ efforts to create an opportunity for self-sufficiency, to foster collective economic empowerment, and to forge a path forward for themselves and their families. All the Cooperativa Posada members currently live or have lived at Posada Esperanza in Austin, a shelter for homeless immigrant mothers and their children. A Study on the Effects of Using Gadgets free essay sample
There has been a little research conducted on different gadgets and the effect they hold on learning. Also, the literature has demonstrated that there are more negative implications to using gadgets than there are positive. The goal of this study was to assess the effects of gadgets, on the test scores of 1st year UERM Nursing students in Anatomy. Fifty-four students are enrolled in the UERM Nursing course. Overall, the findings of this study provided support for the notion that there is a positive effect of using gadgets. A gadget is termed as a device or appliance having a unique purpose or function. At the time of invention, a gadget is often way ahead of its peers in terms of novelty and uniqueness. This is what makes them, so desirable and ââ¬Ëcoolââ¬â¢. The origins of the word gadget trace back to the 19th century. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, there is anecdotal evidence for the use of gadget as a placeholder name for a technical item whose precise name one cant remember since the 1850s; with Robert Browns 1886 book Spunyarn and Spindrift, A sailor boyââ¬â¢s log of a voyage out and home in a China tea-clipper containing the earliest known usage in print. We will write a custom essay sample on A Study on the Effects of Using Gadgets or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The etymology of the word is disputed. A widely circulated story holds that the word gadget was invented when Gaget, Gauthier Cie, the company behind the repousse construction of the Statue of Liberty (1886), made a small-scale version of the monument and named it after their firm; however this contradicts the evidence that the word was already used before in nautical circles, and the fact that it did not become popular, at least in the USA, until after World War I. Other sources cite a derivation from the French gachette which has been applied to various pieces of a firing mechanism, or the Frenchgagee, a small tool or accessory. The top ten gadgets that changed the world are debatable. Nevertheless, popular choices would be the television, telephone, camera, movie camera, microwave oven, video cassette player and recorder, video gaming consoles, Sonyââ¬â¢s Walkman, IBMââ¬â¢s, personal computer or PC and the first cell phone released in 1996, by Motorola. The latest gadgets include superior versions of DVDs, smart phone, camcorders, laptops, iPads, iPhones, the Blackberry, PCs, computer notebooks, pedometers, etc. Modern gadgets have made us all complete slaves to machines. There is no work which cannot be done without the help of machines. No one can deny the fact that gadgets have not only simplified our lives but made a great impact in the society. But, we have grown too much independence to them that we just cannot do without them at all. If cars werenââ¬â¢t invented, we cannot reach our destinations. We cannot cook our food if werenââ¬â¢t for stoves and LPG. Even a simple calculation we still use machines. Right now, modern gadgets have completely transformed the human life and health to a great extent. It is a fact that machines have become like servants without which life comes to a standstill. Objectives This study aims to: 1. Provide information about the effects of using gadgets while studying for a test. 2. Give the students tips how to lessen the use of gadgets. 3. Share some tips on how to get higher grades. Statement of the Problem Specifically this study answers the following questions: 1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using gadgets too often? 2. How can we use these gadgets in a proper and productive way? 3. Role Of Women In Things Fall Apart English Literature Essay free essay sample
In stating an African narrative, it is impossible to make so without adverting the adult females who take portion in many of the activities in a society. This is why different narratives bring out adult females and their functions in the society although the narratives may non be speaking about a adult female as the chief character. Thingss fall apart is no different in conveying out the function of the adult females in a traditional African scene. Womans play polar functions in Educational, Religious and Social attention in the book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. In Things autumn apart, adult females are featured as the chief kids s pedagogues. They do these by stating them narratives, learning them the moralss of socialising with other people and good behaviour particularly to the miss kid, aÃâ Ã ¦children Saturday around their female parent s cookery fire stating storiesaÃâ Ã ¦ , ( Achebe 25 ) . The kids are taught good values and ethical motives by their parents and in this instance, their female parents, who promote them to develop societal values and good interaction accomplishments. The adult female was regarded as an inferior object in the society but this did non turn her down from executing her social functions particularly that of being the pedagogue of the kids. The upbringing of a kid is what determines what the kid will be in the hereafter. In the Ibo community, the raising of a kid was entirely the function of the adult female who was supposed to do certain that the kid was good familiar with the imposts and regulations of the society. The cognition of the social norms was all of importance to the female parent as she needed to educate the kids about them. This was to avoid state of affairss where the kid would be in problem for disgracing the extremely regarded goddesses or leaders of the community which would be a shame to the household particularly the male parent who would set the incrimination on the female parent and perchance crush her. Therefore, in a society which is dominated by work forces, the adult female had to be really careful about the repute the adult male would hold in the society if certain unfortunate things happened may be from the behaviour of the kids or herself which is the ground why female parent instruction to the kids was of import. The adult female s repute depended on that of the adult male which was of import for the adult female to protect. The adult females were besides involved in spiritual affairs and this can be presented in assorted ways. The adult females belonged to the faith of Ibo. They on a regular basis played the portion of the priestess. In the early yearss, a adult female by the name of Chika is seen as a priestess. She is the former priestess of the prophet during Unoka s clip. This adult female was really powerful and respected by the people ( Achebe 17 ) . Thus she portrays the function of adult females in spiritual affairs. Presently, Chielo is the priestess who is besides the hill s and caves prophet, She was the priestess of Agbala, the Oracle of the Hills and the caves, ( Achebe 35 ) . In other words, adult females are seen taking a great portion in faith in the community, for case, as priestesses. The adult female is seen to hold a batch of spiritual power. This is apparent when Chielo, a spiritual adult female, orders and threatens Okonkwo to give up himself and his girl to Agbala who wished to see her. After she warns him, Okonkwo gives in to the thought. Womans in this instance are seen as powerful religious leaders who can warn and order their followings in order to make the right thing that is expected of them by the faith and in this instance in the society of Ibo. Ani was the goddess of the Earth. She was responsible for doing certain that the society observed the right behavior and ethical motives. Ani worked closely with the dead kin members who had their organic structures committed to the Earth ( Achebe 36 ) . The community besides believed that they had to honour the Earth goddess for approvals in order to hold their yam harvests grow. This was done by the members of the kin who had to purely detect the peace hebdomad before the crops ( Achebe 30 ) . The adult female is seen to hold such great religious power, award and regard which are good to the society and which must be respected in order for something good to go on like plenty crops. The kin members are greatly worried about holding such small crops when the peace of the Earth goddess, Ani, is broken by Okonkwo when he battered his married woman. Wife banging was non allowed on the peace hebdomad ( Achebe 30 ) . The adult females were besides involved in work outing jobs of a societal nature. The female parent acts as the comfort non merely to kids but besides to other work forces who have jobs. The work force consisted of a batch of adult females. They performed many strenuous undertakings that were merely separated for them and that work forces could non execute. Painting of Egwugwu s house was done by adult females ( 84 ) .They were besides supposed to entertain the kids at all times and do them turn in an artistic mode ( EmenyoI?nu and Uko 178 ) . The adult female is seen as a powerful object that is able to promote people when experiencing low and demotivated. When the work forces face some societal jobs like disregard, the adult female acts to promote them. Therefore, it is said that the female parent is a superior being who does non abandon her kids in all state of affairss in life, for case Okonkwo who is rejected after killing the boy of Ezeudu. It is believed that a male kid is his male parent s merely when life seems to be fluxing good but when in problem, it his female parent s. This is better depicted by the uncle of Okonkwo who so persuades him to travel back to his female parent as she will accept him at all state of affairss. Despite all this the female parent does non judge or know apart them. The adult female is considered to be the forgiving and understanding being who can neer reject or look down upon anyone and who will supply aid whenever she can. This is a really of import function. There are two matrimonies that are talked about that the author uses them to demo the significance of holding a adult female in the Igbo society. They are the shapers of a place, the prospecting female parents, and people who help work forces in certain undertakings. In any man-woman relationship, kids are the most of import and valuable gifts that they can be given which is non different in this community where the adult female is considered as an of import portion of the household bearing procedure ( EmenyoI?nu and Uko 176 ) . Although in an indirect mode, the importance of a adult female and in this instance, the first married woman in the Ibo society is portrayed in a jubilation held at the Obi of Nwakibie whereby the other married womans are non allowed to imbibe vino before her reaching ( Achebe 22 ) . The first married woman is therefore shown particular regard and acknowledgment in the Ibo community. The name Agbala in the Ibo community means a adult female or a rubric less adult male. In his early childhood, Okonkwo felt disrespected when called the name Agbala as the equals were badgering him and more so his male parent who was seen as a doormat. This truly tormented him and made him go obsessed with consideration of societal position above everything else. Okonkwo struggled so much neer to be associated with anything weak as anything weak was likened to a adult female and frailty versa. Nwoye who is the boy of Okonkwo from his first married woman is besides insulted by being viewed as woman-like merely because Okonkwo is reminded of his male parent when he sees him. In this context we see the adult female being looked down upon by the whole Ibo community as a weak being. The work forces who are non brave and violent are besides seen to be every bit weak as adult females intending that the society s perceptual experience of adult females is that of a individual who is non stron g and is weak ( Whittaker and Msiska 64 ) . The adult female is by and large looked down upon. We see Okonkwo being punished for interrupting the peace of the Earth goddess but non for buttering his married woman. To them married woman pantry is non a offense as harmonizing to the society, the adult female is merely at that place to give birth, to execute house jobs and cook for the hubby and besides to be beaten. This is merely how barbarous the adult male is ( Whittaker and Msiska 65 ) . The narrative was written in the times when the merely of import being in the society was seen as the adult male and non the adult female. The kids who turned out to be scandalous to the society were all demeaned and likened to a adult female. To add to this, the adult female would be blamed for hapless upbringing of the kids as that was entirely considered as her function ( Okpewho 34 ) . The narrative nevertheless shows some regard for few female figures that seem to be really important to the society, for case, the adult females religious leaders. The regard shown to them is non because they are adult females but because the society demands that they be respected for their of import functions in godly intercession. The adult females besides show strong leading, power and art in their work ( Okoye 45 ) . Although the adult female is non the chief character in this narrative, it is clear that she plays a large function and can non be ignored when speaking about the narrative. The functions discussed above show clearly that the adult female plays a polar function in Educational, Religious and Social issues.

Internal Conflicts in Hamlet Essay Example
Internal Conflicts in Hamlet Essay Example Internal Conflicts in Hamlet Essay Internal Conflicts in Hamlet Essay Throughout different contexts, perspectives change. With these changing perspectives, composers collaborate with one another in order to attain a heightened understanding of the context. The enduring quality of Hamlet arises from its textual integrity, and its exploration of universal themes relating to the human condition. As such, the cohesive nature of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Hamlet (1601) is enhanced through Gregory Doranââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ film interpretation Hamlet BBC (2009). An analysis of this contemporary production elucidates the concepts from the original play, exploring the deceptive facades of the protagonist and antagonist. Further we can observe the inter-play of duty on identity and judge the notions of mortality in order to realise the fragility of life. Both texts remain relevant in relating with the modern audience and more specifically, the symbolisation of the ââ¬Ëmouse trap. ââ¬â¢ The notion of verisimilitude, which is chronic to humanity is exemplified in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s revenge tragedy Hamlet through the characters of Hamlet and Claudius. Noblemen such as King Hamlet were seen as individuals chosen by God; therefore Claudiusââ¬â¢ fratricide against King Hamlet was seen as a supremely sinful deed in that context. The serious nature of his crime necessitated his facade. The use of first-person collective and plosives in ââ¬ËOur dear brothersââ¬â¢ deathâ⬠¦ and our whole kingdom be contracted in one brow of woeââ¬â¢ (1. 2. 1-4) emphasizes Claudiusââ¬â¢ overwrought attention in maintaining his ââ¬Ëhonestââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëhonourableââ¬â¢ image. The notion of illusion against reality is further emphasised in the paradox of ââ¬Ëthat we wisest think on himâ⬠¦ With one auspicious and one dropping eyeââ¬â¢ which conveys Claudiusââ¬â¢s insincerity and reflects manââ¬â¢s deceptive capabilities. Hamletââ¬â¢s feigning of an ââ¬Ëantic dispositionââ¬â¢ symbolises his deceit in hiding his renaissance ideologies. Hamletââ¬â¢s aphoristic statement ââ¬Å"that one may smile, and smile, and be a villainâ⬠, after hearing of Claudiusââ¬â¢s murderous act, evokes the central concern of the play in which the line between masquerade and authenticity is blurred. Doranââ¬â¢s interpretation of Hamlet also deepens the contemporary audiencesââ¬â¢ understanding of the difficulty in distinguishing between truth and illusions. In our post-modernist humanist society the film portrays Claudius as a multifaceted individual. Over the progressive passing of time, there has been a lowering of standard and apprehension towards the royal families of today; hence Doranââ¬â¢s Hamlet (2009) interprets Claudius as the victim in the after ââ¬âmath of King Hamletsââ¬â¢ murder, rather than Hamlet. This is evident in the use of chiaroscuro and ominous, non-diegetic music in the background as Claudius presents his soliloquy ââ¬ËOh my offence is rank, it smells to heaven;ââ¬â¢, which portrays him as exposed and helpless. This is juxtaposed with Hamlet in the darkness, portraying him as sinister and secretive. The additional quirky facial expression on Hamlet captured by a POV shot during the ââ¬Ëmouse trapââ¬â¢ scene is presented to heighten this discreet, dark atmosphere on Hamlet. Hamletââ¬â¢s sustainment of his overzealous, insane actions during his soliloquy emphasizes the directorsââ¬â¢ interpretations on Hamlet being mad in reality. Therefore, the tenuous nature of truth allows us to question mankindââ¬â¢s nature and how appearances can easily interfere with our perception of reality. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play Hamlet, through the characterisation of its protagonist, examines the justifiability of the universal notion of revenge. Hamlet faces an internal conflict to seek revenge against Claudius due to the conflicting notions of chivalric vengeance and the Renaissance ideal of divine retribution. The torment of the protagonist is conveyed in the soliloquy ââ¬Å"O that this too too solid flesh would meltâ⬠, which depicts his deep anguish in fulfilling his fate as the avenger. (Do you have any ideas for contextual info? Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Hamlet indicates that rather Hamlet desiring to seek revenge for his father, he was merely forced into the action. The use of metaphor accompanied with war imagery ââ¬Ësuffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortuneâ⬠¦ To die, to sleepâ⬠¦ Ay, thereââ¬â¢s the rubââ¬â¢ are used to highlight Hamletââ¬â¢s conflicting dilemmas on suicide and spirituality. Hamletââ¬â¢s contemplation of suicide emphasizes that the pressure of his duties laid down by the ghost has ultimately acted as a catalyst in initiating his down-fall. This can be concluded that Hamletsââ¬â¢ fate has been pre-determined, caused by a series of chain of events linked to the time period when King Hamlet was alive. This emphasizes the delicate, yet complicated structure of mortality how one course of action can dramatically change one individualsââ¬â¢ life. Hamletsââ¬â¢ contemplation in regards to his spiritual morality reflects and relates to the general dilemma of modern society, further proving that Hamlet remains relevant in society regardless of time. The use of personification ââ¬ËThe undiscovered countryâ⬠¦ puzzles the willâ⬠¦ thus conscience does make cowards of us allââ¬â¢ (3. . 79-83) foreshadows Hamletsââ¬â¢ existential conscience preventing him from taking revenge on Claudius quick enough. Contrastingly, Doranââ¬â¢s adaptation portrays Hamlet as an incompetent and demotivated individual in regards to his duties and identity. This emulates the ill-attentive, careless nature of the contemporary so ciety of today. The use of comical non-diegetic sound and a slanted crown on Hamletsââ¬â¢ head portrays him as care-free and ignorant of the situation he is in. Contrastingly, a more serious side of Hamlet is shown during the scene of Claudiusââ¬â¢ soliloquy. Hamletsââ¬â¢ grim facial features in the darkness compared to Claudius under the light emphasizes Hamlet as being very sincere in regards to the revenge of Claudius. This is very puzzling as the directorsââ¬â¢ overall interpretation of Hamlet differs from the serious nature of him in this scene. Through the directorââ¬â¢s adaptation, this can be concluded as Hamletsââ¬â¢ inconsistency also shown throughout the course of the play. The concepts of revenge and retribution are seen strongly through Hamletsââ¬â¢ ponder on existentialism and the futile depth of his revenge. The use of allusion and repetition of Alexander the Great ââ¬ËAlexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander returneth to dustââ¬â¢ emphasizes that it is pointless in achieving for great things if in the end; we all are reduced to dust. This further reflects the care-free attitudes of the individuals in the modern society. Doranââ¬â¢s adaptation of Hamlet is a model exemplar of this concept by viewing revenge as a thrill-seeker in the eyes of Hamlet. Doran portrays Hamlet as very lively and excited during the scene of the ââ¬Ëmouse trapââ¬â¢ displaying him as taking the whole situation as a game he must win through his facial features. Any other ideas? Ran out) This is assumed that it has been deliberately done by the director in order to contrast from the mundane lives of the contemporary society. In conclusion, the fluid nature of the universally coherent themes within Hamlet remains relevant in society regardless of time. Individuals obtain a heightened understandi ng of this play through the collaboration of unique ideas. Doran additionally further highlights Hamletââ¬â¢s sinister image through the absence of light on Hamletsââ¬â¢ face during the scene of Claudiusââ¬â¢ soliloquy.

The future Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The future - Essay Example Thus, my analysis of the future will begin with the likely changes and trends that will emerge in the global society. One country cannot be analyzed in isolation of the larger global community. Geographical and political boundaries are being eradicated by the elimination of trade barriers and rapid integration of capital markets. The world is quickly becoming a global village which facilities the entry of products, services, people, and capital in each country. Alongside is the huge advancement in technology. Technological breakthroughs brought products which are important in promoting efficiency in business operations. These advances ripple to households and individuals in the form of luxury and convenience. I believe that these trends will continue in the future. Furthermore, these factors will have the most significant impact in the personal and family life. The rapid integration of markets in the global community will have a huge effect in my personal life specifically in my career. I know that this development, together with companies' increasing preference of having a more diversified workforce will bring me face to face with people having different cultures. The interaction with these individuals will affect me in more ways that I can imagine. It is irrefutable that a person is shaped by his immediate environment.

Markecting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Markecting - Essay Example hael Porter the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard Business School has commented that any business and its standing at any point in time can best be evaluated through making it go through a value chain analysis. Best value can be defined as the difference between total revenues and total costs. The company that can maximize this difference is adding value. This difference can be enhanced in a better manner when the firm is aware of where its costs are high and where they are low (Schmitz, 2005). Thus, this model basically entails the breaking down of organizational activities into various small units and then assigning costs to each unit so as to determine the amount that it is costing the company. This calculation of costs is important because a company can then see where it can curtail costs and where a slight cost relaxation would not harm the value chain. Value chain activities take place in almost every organization. From buying the raw materials to the product design, from the product development stages to the distribution of the product, such activities are easy to identify. They have to be broken down into the smallest units possible, so that identification of those activities where cost curtailment would help can be carried out. From industry to industry, the activities will differ slightly (Miguel, 1996). For example, the hotel industry will have sub-activities within customer service such as room service and telephone services, whereas the advertising industry, which is the subject of discussion of this report, will have activities such as conducting research and creating advertising briefs. Through such a process of analysis, VCA helps companies in assessing their own strengths and weaknesses and then comparing them to the VCA of their competitors, as well as their own VCA trends seen over time. This comparison helps companies to decide upon their core competence and distinctive competence and to capitalize on those strengths,

The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri and Mira Nair Movie Review
The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri and Mira Nair - Movie Review Example The Namesake is directed by Mira Nair, with Jhumpa Lahiri helping out with the screenplay along with Sooni Taraporevala. Kal Penn plays Gogol, who the title of the movie is after. His parents Ashima and Ashoke are played by Tabu and Irrfan Khan respectively. They have another child, a girl called Sonia who is acted by Sahira Nair. The story starts off with Ashoke travelling in a train, reading a book written by the Russian author Nikolai Gogol. A brutal accident takes place in which almost everyone dies. However, Ashoka survives and is only discovered because of the fluttering page of the book he was reading earlier. His recovery follows his marriage to Ashima ââ¬â a girl chosen to be his bride by his parents ââ¬â and they move to the States. It is hard for Ashima to live at a place which is completely different from the place where she had spent all her life at. Life in New York City is poles apart than life in Calcutta. Yet she does manage to try her best to fit in. An Indian wife is nothing if not willing to change herself, her lifestyle just for the sake of her husband. What was fortunate for Ashima was that Ashoke actually fell in love with her and her with him, which made adapting comparatively easier. She knew the English language, but not fluently. But she worked it all out just to make her husband happy. Life away from her parents, everything that was familiar, was not easy, and she particularly felt the absence at the birth of her first child named Gogol when there was no one around but her husband. Ashima adjusts to the new environment but seeing her children so utterly unconscious of all the traditions and values that she was brought up with pains her. She tries to smile it off, fully aware of how things were different now that they were not living in their native land, with their elders to guide them. She was told to stay close to her family whereas her children were moving out. Their dressing, the songs they blasted were miles apart.à Ã

Eye Nutrition for Optimal Vision and Performance
Eye Nutrition for Optimal Vision and Performance Many athletes put emphasis on training, fueling, and rest, but many do not focus on the importance of good eyesight. Optometrists estimate up to 80 percent of the information we accumulate during a sporting competition comes from our eyes and 95% of all physical movement is controlled visually and triggers the first movement of the athlete. (1,2,3) Even eye sight that is slightly blurred can reduce performance. (4) EYE ANATOMY The major components of the eye that affect performance and overall vision are the macula, retina and the lens. Macula is an oval-shaped highly pigmented yellow spot near the center of the retina of the eye[t1]. It is responsible for central, high resolution/acuity vision. The macula is yellow in color and it absorbs excess blue and ultraviolet light that enter the eye, and acts as a natural sun block for the retina. [t2] Retina is the layer at the back of the eyeball containing cells that is are sensitive to light and where a visual image is formed.[t3][t4] Lens covers the front of the eye and its role (along with the cornea) is to focus light on the retina NUTRITION What types of foods you put in your body not only impacts performance but impacts your eyes. A large-scale research project conducted by the National Eye Institute found there are several nutrients that help protect our eyes. The most important ones are beta carotene, vitamin C, Vit D, Vit E, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc and omega 3 fats (5). Beta Carotene (Precursor to Vit A) is an antioxidant.ââ¬âHelps produce pigment in the retina of the eye and promotes good vision especially in low light (night vision). Sources include apricots, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, dark green leafy vegetables, pink grapefruit, pumpkin, spinach, sweet potatoes. Vit Cââ¬â is a water soluble essential nutrient and an important antioxidant. The eyes need relatively high levels of high Vit C to function properly. One of its main roles is to support small blood vessels to and around the eyes. The lens of the eye is also highly concentrated with the nutrient(5). Sources include Brussels sprouts, bell peppers, broccoli, berries and citrus fruit. Vit D (D3 cholecalciferol)ââ¬âHas been shown to positivity impact vision and reduce retinal inflammation (6,). Food sources include cod liver oil, Atlantic pickled herring, salmon, mackerel , sardine and tuna packed in oil, fortified cereals/dairy/soy/tofu products, eggs and mushrooms. Vit E (d-alpha tocopherol)ââ¬â is one of our bodyââ¬â¢s most powerful fat soluble antioxidants. Higher intake of vitamin E can increase the level in the retina. Vitamin E is also found in the lens. It protects cells of the eyes from damage and provides ocular protection (5). Sources include wheat germ, almonds, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, peanuts, peanut butter and sweet potatoes. Lutein and Zeaxanthinââ¬âthese powerful carotenoids are naturally present in the macula. They are part of the retina responsible for central vision. These vital nutrients work to filter 40-90% of the harmful blue light, the kind of light that can damage the macula. These nutrients act like sunscreen for your eyes. They can increase the pigment density in the macula. The greater the pigment density means better retina protection and a lower risk of macular degeneration (5). These antioxidants cannot be produced by our bodies on their own, so they must be obtained through diet and/or supplements. Sources include egg yolk, broccoli, corn, green leafy vegetables (kale, collards, spinach, turnip greens) and peas. Zinc (Zinc Oxide)ââ¬âis an essential mineral. It helps get vitamin A from the liver to the retina for eye-protective melanin production. Proper amounts of zinc help with ocular protection, night vision and cataract prevention. Sources includes fortified cereals, legumes of all kinds (black eyed peas, kidney beans, lima beans) lean red meat, poultry, seafood and pumpkin seeds. Omega 3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil) two types docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA.) They are major components of nervous and retinal tissues and are highly concentrated in the ocular tissues. They help promote healthy tear production necessary for healthy and comfortable eyes, protect tiny vessels within the eyes and low levels of these fatty acids can be linked to dry eye syndrome (7,8,9). Sources include salmon, tuna, sardines and anchovies. Eye Health and Performance The thicker and denser the macular pigment the more your eyes are protected. This thickness also reduces glare and light sensitivity along with improving photo stress recovery, contrast sensitivity, and processing speed (10). Since the eyes and brain are connected, a millisecond difference in seeing the ball for example is a difference between a strike and a home run. A 95-mile-per-hour fastball takes less than half a second to get to the plate. A player must decide to swing in approximately 0.458 seconds. That means the hitter must see the ball and decide whether to swing or not. Eye Health for Macular Degeneration and Cataracts Approximately 10% of people between 66 to 74 years of age will have findings of macular degeneration. The prevalence increases to 30% when they are between 75 to 85 years of age (11). Macular degeneration is when you have a loss of vision in the center of the visual field (the macula) because of damage to the retina. It is a major cause of blindness and visual impairment in older adults. Cataracts are another common eye problem. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Cataracts are a medical condition in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively cloudy, resulting in blurred vision. SUMMARY Protecting your eyes and having optimal vision starts with the food on your plate. Maximizing the thickness of your macula pigment optimizes sports performance and decreases your chances of macular degeneration and cataracts. Aim for a diet high in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards, salmon, tuna, and other oily fish, eggs, nuts, beans, other non-meat protein sources, and oranges and other citrus fruits or juices. Sammy the Social Climber in John Updikes A&P :: A&P Essays
Sammy the Social Climber in A & P Men will go to extreme measures to impress women. This is the case in the story "A & P" written by John Updike. Sammy, who is a cashier at a supermarket, displays a classic example of a man trying to impress a woman. His rash decision to quit his job was a bad decision and will definitely have an adverse effect on him in the future. Sammy seems doomed from the very first sentence when he says, "In walks three girls in nothing but bathing suits" (Updike 1026). He notices every little detail about the girls from the color of their bathing suits to their tan lines. At this time he is checking out "one of these cash-register-watchers," and he is yelled at for ringing up her item twice (Updike 1026). This distraction from his job shows his interest in the girls, especially the one he calls "Queenie." To Sammyââ¬â¢s delight, Queenie and her two friends pick his register to purchase the "Fancy Herring Snacks in Pure Sour Cream" (Updike 1027). When she puts the snacks down on the counter, Sammy notices that her hands are free. While he is wondering where the money is going to come from, she proceeds to pull the dollar bills "out of the hollow at the center of her nubbled pink top" (Updike 1027). This gesture puts Sammy in total awe of the girl, and this is the turning point, this is when he makes his decision that he should try to impress her. His big chance comes when the store manager, Lengel, makes a visit to Sammyââ¬â¢s line. "Girls, this isnââ¬â¢t the beach," is the first thing Lengel says to the girls when he sees them (Updike 1028). Queenie explains that her mother sent her to pick up some herring snacks, implying that since her mother sent her it is perfectly fine for her to be in the store with only a bathing suit on. While Lengel and Queenie are arguing, Sammy visualizes himself at Queenieââ¬â¢s house during a party. In his imagination he sees, "her father and the other men were standing around in ice-cream coats and bow ties and the women were in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks off a big glass plate and they were all holding drinks the color of water with olives and sprigs of mint in them" (Updike 1028).

Herman Case
Companiesâ⬠list in both 2008 and 2010. The three high-technology organizations selected for these lists were Microsoft, Cisco, and Google. Unlike most firms, especially those in mature industries and most of its office furniture rivals, Herman Miller had pursued a path distinctively marked by reinvention and renewal. This path had served it well over the decades. It survived the Great Depression early in its history and multiple recessions in the 20th century In the early part of the 21st century, it recovered from the dot. Com bust.In 201 2, Herman Miller once again was facing turbulent and uncertain economic conditions. Would its propensity for using innovation to reinvent and renew its business once again allow the company to flourish and grow? How far and how fast might the company be able to push its annual revenues above the 201 1 level of $1. 6 billion? COMPANY BACKGROUND Herman Miller's roots went back to 1905 and the Star Furniture Company, a manufacturer of traditiona listic bedroom suites in Zealand, Michigan. In 1909, it was renamed Michigan Star Furniture Company and hired Dirk Jan De Pre as a clerk.De Pre, became president in 191 9 and four years later convinced his father-in-law, Herman Miller, to purchase the majority of hares; De Pre renamed the company Herman Miller Furniture Company in recognition of Millers support. In 1 927, De Pre committed himself to treating ââ¬Å"all workers as individuals with special talents and potential. â⬠This occurred after he visited the family of a millwright who had died unexpectedly. During the visit, the widow read some poetry Upon asking the widow who the poet was, De Pre was surprised to learn it was the millwright. This led him to wonder whether the millwright was a worker who wrote poetry or a poet who worked as a millwright. This story was part of Herman Miller's corporate culture, which intended to generate respect for all employees and fueled the quest to tap the diversity of gifts and skill s held by all. In 1 930, the United States was in the Great Depression and Herman Miller was in financial trouble. As De Pre was looking for a way to save the company, Gilbert Rhode, a designer from New York, approached him and told him about his design philosophy.Rhode then asked for an opportunity to design a bedroom suite for a fee of $1 ,OHO. When De Pre reacted negatively to such a fee, Rhode suggested an alternative payment plan-?a 3 percent royalty on the furniture sold-?to which De Pre agreed, figuring that there as nothing to lose. A few weeks later, De Pre received the-first designs from Rhode. Again, he reacted negatively. In response, Rhode wrote De Pre a letter explaining his design philosophy: ââ¬Å"[Horst,] utter simplicity: no surface enrichment, no carvings, no molding, [and second,] furniture should be anonymous.People are Important, not furniture. Furniture should be usefulâ⬠Rhodes designs were antithetical to traditional designs, but De Pre saw merit in th em and set Herman Miller on a course of designing and selling furniture that reflected a way of life. In 1 942, Herman Miller produced its first office furniture-?a Gilbert Rhode sign referred to as the Executive Office Group. Rhode died two years later, and De Pre began a search for a new design leader. After reading an article in Life magazine ââ¬Å"about designer George Nelson, De Pre hired Nelson as Herman Miller's first design director. In 1 946, De Pre hired Charles and Ray Names, a husband-and-wife design team based in Los Angels. In the same year, Charles Earn sees designs were featured in the first one-man furniture exhibit at New Work's Museum of Modern Art. Some of his designs became part of the museum's permanent collection. Many sources were helpful in providing material for this case, mà ¶SST articulacy employees at Herman Miller who generously shared their time and viewpoints about the company to help ensure that the case accurately reflected the company's practices and culture. They provided many resources, including internal documents and stories of their personal experiences. In 1 950, Herman Miller, under the guidance of Dry. Carl Frost, a professor at Michigan State University, became the first company in the state of Michigan to implement a Scansion Plan, a productivity incentive program devised by labor expert Joseph N. Scansion. Underlying the Scansion Plan were the principles of equity and justice for everyone in the companyâ⬠Two major functional elements Of Scansion plans were the use of committees for sharing ideas on improvements and a structure for sharing increased profitability. The relationship between Frost and Herman Miller continued for at least four decades. During the asses, Herman Miller introduced a number of new furniture designs, including those by Alexander Gerard, Charles and Ray Names, and George Nelson. Specifically, the company introduced the first molded fiberglass chairs and the Names lounge chair and ottoman (see Exhibit 1). The Names designs were introduced on NBC Home Show with Arlene Francis, a precursor to the Today show. Also in the asses, Herman Miller began its first overseas foray, selling its products in the European market. In 1 962, D. J.De Pre became chairman of the board and his son, Hugh De Pre, became president and chief executive officer. D. J. De Pre had served for more than 40 years as the president of Herman Miller. EXHIBIT 1 Names Lounge Chair and Ottoman During the 1 sass, Herman Miller introduced many new designs for both home and office. The most notable design was the Action Office System, the rolls first open-plan modular office arrangement of movable; panels and attachments. By the end of the 1 sass, Herman Miller had formed a subsidiary in England with sales and marketing responsibility throughout England and the Scandinavian countries. The company also established dealers in South and Central America, Australia, Canada, Europe, Africa, the Near East, and Japa n. In 1 970, Herman Miller went public and made its first stock offering. The stock certificate was designed by the Names office staff. The company entered the health/science market in 1 971 and introduced the Oregon chair, its first design eased on scientific observation and ergonomic principles, in 1976. In 1 979, in conjunction with the University of Michigan, Herman Miller established the Facility Management Institute, which pioneered the profession of facility management. The company continued to expand overseas and introduce new designs throughout the asses. By 1 977, more than half of Herman Miller's 2,500 employees worked outside the production area. The Scansion Plan therefore needed to be overhauled, since it had been designed originally for a production workforce. In addition, employees worked at multiple U. S. And overseas locations. In 1 978, an ad hoc committee of 54 people from nearly every segment of the company was elected to examine the need for changes and to make recommendations.By January 1979, the committee had developed a final draft. The plan established a new organization structure based on work teams, caucuses, and councils. All employees were given an opportunity to discuss the new plan in small group settings. On January 26,1 979,96 percent of the employees voted to accept the new plan. After 18 years as president and CEO, Hugh De Pre stepped down; his younger brother, Max De pre, became chairman and chief executive officer n 1980. In 1981, Herman Miller took a major initiative to become more efficient and environmentally friendly. Its Energy Center generated both electrical and steam power to run its 1 -million-square-foot facility by burning waste. 2 In 1983, Herman Miller established a plan whereby all employees became shareholders. This initiative occurred approximately 10 years before congressional incentives fueled employee stock ownership plan (ESP.) growth. In 1 984, Herman Miller introduced the Aqua chair, a second chair base d on ergonomic principles; many other designs followed in the 1 9805. In 1987, the iris non-De Pre family member, Dickered, became chief executive officer.By the end of the decade, Time magazine had recognized the Aqua chair as a Design of the Decade. Also, in 1989, Herman Miller established its Environmental Quality Action Team, whose purpose was to ââ¬Å"coordinate environmental programs worldwide and involve as many employees as possible. â⬠In 1990, Herman Miller became a founding member of the Tropical Forest Foundation and was the only furniture manufacturer to belong. That same year, it discontinued using endangered rosewood in its redrawing Names lounge chair and ottoman, and substituted cherry and walnut from sustainable sources. It also became a founding member of the U. S. Green Building Council in 1994. Some of the buildings at Herman Miller were used to establish Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LED) standards. Because of its environmental efforts, He rman Miller received awards from Fortune magazine and the National Wildlife Federation in the 1 9905. Also in the 1 sass, Herman Miller again introduced some groundbreaking designs. In 1 994, it introduced the Aaron chair (see Exhibit 2), which almost immediately was added to the New York Museum of Modern Art's permanent sign collection. In 1999, the Aaron chair won the Design of the Decade Award from Businesslike and the Industrial Designers I Society of America. In 1 992, J. Kermit Campbell became Herman Miller's fifth CEO and president. He was the first person from outside the company to hold either position. In 1995, Campbell resigned and Mike Evolved was promoted to CEO. Evolved, just 39 years old, had been with a company called Meridian for seven years before Herman Miller acquired it in 1990, so when he became CEO he had been with either Herman Miller or its subsidiary for 12 years. At the time, the industry was in a slump and Herman Miller was being restructured. Sales were ap proximately $1 billion annually. EXHIBIT 2 The Herman Miller Aaron Chair In 1 994, the company launched a product line called Herman Miller for the Home to focus on the residential market. It reintroduced some Of its modern classic designs from the asses, asses, and asses as well as new designs. In 1998, it set up a specific website (www. Home. Com) to tap into this market. Attachments took additional marketing initiatives to focus on small and midsized businesses. It established a network of 1 80 retailers to focus on small genuineness and made a 3-D design computer program available to midsized customers. In addition, its order entries were digitally linked among the company and its suppliers, distributors, and customers to expedite orders and improve their accuracy 3 THE FIRST DECADE OF THE 21ST CENTURY The first decade of the 21 SST century started off spectacularly for Herman Miller, with record profits and sales in 2000 and 2001.The company offered: an employee stock option pla n (ESP.) in July 2000, and Time magazine selected the Names molded ply'. Judd chair a Design of the Century. Sales had ore than doubled in the six years that Mike Evolved had been CEO. Then the dot. Com bubble burst and the terrorist attacks of September 1 1 , 2001, shook the U. S. Economy. Herman Miller's sales dropped by 34 percent, from more than $22 billion in 2001 to less than $1. 5 billion in 2002. In the same two years, the company saw a decline in profits from a positive $144 million to a negative $56 million. In an interview for Fascinating magazine in 2007, Evolved said, ââ¬Å"One night went to bed a genius and woke up the town idiotâ⬠Although sales continued to drop in 2003, Herman Miller returned to reparability in that year. To do so, Herman Miller had to drop its long-held tradition of lifelong employment; approximately 38 percent of the workforce was laid off, and an entire plant in Georgia was closed. Mike Evolved and Brian Walker, then president of Herman Mill er North America, met with all the workers to tell them what was happening and why it had to be done. One Of the workers being laid off was so moved by Evolved and Walkers presentation that she told them she felt sorry for them having to personally lay off workers. To replace the tradition of lifelong employment, Evolved, tit input from many others, developed what the company referred to as ââ¬Å"the new social contract. â⬠He explained it as follows: We are a commercial enterprise, and the customer has to be on center stage, so we have to first figure out whether your gifts and talents have a match with the needs and wants of this commercial enterprise. If they don't, then we want to wish you the best, but we do need to tell you that I don't have a job for you right now. As part of the implementation of the social contract, the company redesigned benefit plans such as educational reimbursement and 401 (k) plans to be more portable. This done to decrease the cost of changing job s for employees whose gifts and talents no longer matched customer needs. Herman Miller's sales and profits began to climb from 2003 to 2008. In 2008, even though sales were not at an all-time high, the company's profits had reached a record level.Walker became president in 2003 and CEO in 2004. Evolved became chairman of the board in 2004. Then Herman Miller was hit by the recession of 2009. Sales dropped by 1 9 percent, from approximately $2. 0 billion in 2008 to approximately $ 1. 6 billion in 2009. In the same years, profits dropped from $1 52 million to $68 million. In March 2009, Mark Churchman, director of external communications at Herman Miller, predicted that the changes made to recover from the 2001-2003 recession would help the company weather the recession that began in late 2007.HERMAN MILLER IN 2012 Herman Miller had codified its long-practiced organizational values and published them on its website on a page titled ââ¬Å"What We Believe. â⬠Those beliefs, liste d as follows, were intended as a basis for uniting all employees, building relationships, and contributing to communities: ; Curiosity & Exploration: These are two of our greatest strengths. They he behind our heritage of research- driven design. How do we keep our curiosity? By respecting and encouraging risk, and by practicing forgiveness. You can't be curious and infallible. In one sense, if you never make a mistake, you're not exploring new ideas often enough. Everybody makes mistakes: we ought to celebrate honest mistakes, learn from them, and move on. ; Engagement: For us, it is about being owners-? actively committed to the life of this community called Herman Miller, sharing in its success and risk. Stock ownership is an important ingredient, but it's not enough. The strength and the payoff really come when engaged people own problems, solutions, and behavior. Acknowledge responsibility, choose to step forward and be counted.Care about this community and make a difference in it. ; Performance: Performance is required for leadership. We want to be leaders, so we are committed to performing at the highest level possible. Performance isn't a choice. It's up to everybody at Herman Miller to perform at his or her best. Our own high performance-?however we measure it-?enriches our lives as employees, delights our customers, and creates real value for our shareholders ; Inclusiveness: To succeed as a company, we must include all the expressions of human talent and potential that society offers. We value the whole person and everything each of us has to offer, obvious or not so 4 obvious. We believe that every person should have the chance to realize his or her potential regardless of color, gender, age, sexual orientation, educational background, weight, height, family status, skill level-? the list goes on and on. When we are truly inclusive, we go beyond toleration to understanding all the qualities that make people who they are, that make us unique, and most important, that unite us. Design: Design for us is a way of looking at the world and how it works-?or doesn't.It is a method for getting something done, for solving a problem. To design a solution, rather than simply devising one, requires research, thought, sometimes starting over, listening, and humility. Sometimes design results in memorable occasions, timeless chairs, or really fun parties. Design isn't just the way something looks; it sinusitis the way something works, either. ; Foundations: The past can be a tricky thing-?an anchor or a sail, a tether or a launching pad. We value and respect our past without being ruled by it. The stories, people, and experiences in Herman Miller's past form a unique foundation. Our past teaches us about design, human compassion, leadership, risk taking, seeking out change and working together. From that foundation, we can move forward together with a common language, a set of owned beliefs and understandings. We value our rich legacy more for what it shows us we might become than as a picture of what we've been. ; A Better World: This is at the heart of Herman Miller and the real reason why many of us come to work every day. We contribute to a better world by pursuing sustainability and environmental wisdom.Environmental advocacy is part of our heritage and a responsibility we gladly bear for future generations. We reach for a better world by giving time and money to our communities and causes outside the company; through becoming a good corporate citizen worldwide; and even in the (not so) simple act of adding beauty to the world. By participating in the effort, we lift our spirits and the spirits of those around us. ; Transparency: Transparency begins with letting people see how decisions are made and owning the decisions we make. So when you make a decision, own it.Confidentiality has a place at Herman Miller, but if you can't tell anybody about a decision you've made, you've probably made a poor choice. Without tran sparency, it's impossible to have trust and integrity. Without trust and integrity, its impossible to be transparent All employees were expected to live these values. Management Mike Evolved remained chairman of the board in 2012, and Brian Walker was president and CEO. Walker's compensation was listed by Bloomberg Businesslike as $693,969 in 2011. The magazine listed compensation for Coos at four competitors as ranging from $778,000 to $973,000.Walker and our other top executives at Herman Miller took a 10 percent pay cut in January 2009 and, along with all salaried workers, another 10 percent cut in March 2009. The production workers were placed on a work schedule that consisted of nine days in two weeks, effectively cutting their pay by 10 percent as well. That the executives would take a pay cut before salaried workers, and one twice as much as that required by workers, was just one way human compassion was practiced at Herman Miller. However, most employees' pay cuts and furlou ghs were ended in June 201 0 when the company's financial performance began to improve.By U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations, a publicly traded Company had to have a board of directors. By Herman Miller's corporate policy, the majority of the 14 members of the board had to be independent. To be judged independent, the individual as a minimum had to meet the NASDAQ National Market requirements for independent directors (NASDAQ Stock Market Rule 4200). In addition, the individual could not have any ââ¬Å"other material relationship with the company or its affiliates or with any executive officer of the company or his or her affiliates. Moreover, according o company documents, any ââ¬Å"transaction between the Company and any executive officer or director of the Company (including that persons spouse, children, stepchildren, parents, stepparents, siblings, parents-law, children- in-law, siblings-in-law and persons sharing the same residence) must be disclosed to the Board of Directors and is subject to the approval of the Board of Directors Or the Nominating and Governance Committee unless the proposed transaction is part of a general program available to all directors or employees equally under an existing policy or is a purchase of Company reduces consistent with the price and terms of other transactions of similar size with other purchasers. â⬠Furthermore, ââ¬Å"It is the policy of the Board that all directors, consistent with their responsibilities to the stockholders of the company as a whole, hold an equity interest in the company. Toward this end, the.Board requires that each director will have an equity interest after one year on the Board, and within five years the Board encourages the 5 directors to have shares of common stock of the company with a value of at least three times the amount of the annual retainer paid to each director. â⬠In there words, board members were held to standards consistent with Herman Mill er's corporate beliefs and its ESP. program. Although Herman Miller had departments, the most frequently referenced work unit was the team. Paul Murray, director of environmental health and safety, explained the relationship between the team and the department as follows: At Herman Miller, team has just been the term that has been used since the Scansion Plan and the De Peres brought that into Herman Miller. And so I think that's why we use that almost exclusively. The department-? as a department, we help facilitate the other teams. And so they aren't just department driven. Teams were often cross-functional. Membership on a team was based on the employee's ability to contribute to that team. As Gave Wing lead chemical engineer for the company's Design for the Environment division, described it, You grab the appropriate representative who can best help your team achieve its goal. It doesn't seem to be driven based on title. It's based on who has the ability to help us drive our init iatives towards our goal. Teams were often based on product development. When the product had been developed, the members of that team were redistributed to new rejects.New projects could come from any level in the organization: One way in which leadership was shared at Herman Miller was through the concept of ââ¬Å"talking up and down the ladder. â⬠Workers at all levels were encouraged to put forth new ideas. Herman Miller environmental specialist Rudy Barrels said, If they try something they have folks there that will help them and be there for them.. That requires a presence of one of us or an e-mail or just to say, ââ¬Å"Yeah, I think that's a great idea. â⬠That's how a tot â⬠¦ In the organization works. Because Herman Miller workers felt empowered, a new manager could run onto some startling behavior. Paul Murray recalled, can remember my first day on the job. I took my safety glasses 0 if . ND an employee stepped forward and said, ââ¬Å"Get your safety glass es back on At [Company X, Company there was no way they would have ever talked to a supervisor like that, much less their supervisor's manager. It's been a fun journey when the workforce is that empowered. The company's beliefs were also reinforced through the Employee Gifts Committee and the Environmental Quality Action Team. True to Herman Millers practice of shared leadership, the Employee Gifts Committee distributed funds and other sources based on employee involvement. Jay Link, manager of corporate giving explained the program as follows: Our first priority is to honor organizations where our employees are involved. We believe that it's important that we engender kind of a giving spirit in our employees, so if we know they're involved in organizations, which is going to be where we have a manufacturing presence, then our giving kind of comes alongside organizations that the/re involved with. So that's our first priority. In addition, all Herman Miller employees could work 16 pa id hours a year with a charitable organization of their choice. The company set goals for the number of employee volunteer hours contributed annually to its communities. Progress toward meeting those goals was reported to the CEO. The Environmental Affairs Team, formed in 1 988 with the authorization of Max De pre, had responsibility for such activities as recycling solid waste and designing products from sustainable resources. One of the team's successes was in the reduction of solid waste taken to landfills. In 1 991, Herman Miller was sending 41 million pounds of solid waste to landfills. That figure was down to 24 million pounds by 1 994 and to 3. 6 million pounds by 2008. Such improvements were both environmentally friendly and costiveness. Herman Miller's beliefs carried over to the family and the community. Gave Wing related, ââ¬Å"I've got the worst lawn in my neighborhood. That's because don't spread pesticides on it, and don't put fertilizer down. â⬠He went on to say that he and his wife had to make a difficult decision in the summer of 2009 6 because Herman Miller had a policy ââ¬Å"to avoid PVC [polyvinyl chloride] wherever possible. In restoring their home, they chose fiber cement board over PVC siding even though the fiber cement board was considerably more costly. Wing said, ââ¬Å"Seven years ago, I didn't really think about it. â⬠Rudy Barrels was involved in a youth soccer association that raised money to buy uniforms by collecting newspapers and aluminum cans. Barrels said, ââ¬Å"When I'll speak they'll say, ââ¬ËYeah, that's Rudy. He's Herman Miller. You should-?you know we're goanna have to do this. ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ë The company's beliefs carried over to all functional areas of the business. Some of them were obviously beneficial, and some were simply the way Herman Miller chose to conduct its business.

Old School Hack
Old School Hack Old School Hack Old School Hack By Maeve Maddox Before computing added new meanings to the word hack, the meaning I associated most commonly with it was ââ¬Å"a writer who churns out unimaginative writing for hire.â⬠This use of the word hack derives from the horse rental industry. Hack is the shortened form of hackney, a word that entered English from French haquenà ©e, ââ¬Å"a small horse suitable for ordinary riding.â⬠In The Canterbury Tales (c.1368), Chaucer describes the Canonââ¬â¢s Yeoman as riding ââ¬Å"a dapple-gray hackney.â⬠From meaning a type of horse, hackney came to mean a rented horse. Because hired horses were overworked, hackney and hack came to mean any person employed in servile, tedious, and tiring work. As an adjective, hackney meant ââ¬Å"worn out by indiscriminate or vulgar use.â⬠One could speak of ââ¬Å"a hackney proverbâ⬠or ââ¬Å"a hackney plot.â⬠In modern English, the adjective with this meaning is hackneyed: His [Dreiserââ¬â¢s] hackneyed and clichà ©d diction occurs frequently when he is not engaged in a form of indirect discourse, as in his description of the New York theatre district. By the 18th century, the noun hackney had been shortened to hack and could mean either ââ¬Å"a hired horseâ⬠or ââ¬Å"a hired carriage.â⬠In the United States, hack is still used as a word for taxicab. By the 1770s, hack had taken on the meaning of ââ¬Å"a literary drudge, who hires himself out to do any and every kind of literary work; hence, a poor writer, a mere scribbler.â⬠It is still used with this sense by speakers who grew up before the word became associated with computing: There is hack fiction all over the best seller list so nothing new there. [James] Patterson belongs in his own category, reserved for the hacks committed to hacking every day. [Peter] Brown is a lesser hacker. Journalists have long been referred to as hacks because they must produce daily content on a variety of subjects. The application of the word hack to prolific, high-earning novelists scorned by literary critics has produced a backlash against the pejorative use of the word hack. Writing in The Guardian, David Barnett demands ââ¬Å"Whats wrong with being a hack?â⬠He reminds readers that literary giant Samuel Johnson declared ââ¬Å"No man but a blockhead ever wrote, except for money.â⬠Barnett sees nothing wrong with being ââ¬Å"prolific, inventive, writing for a populist mass-market readershipâ⬠and making money for it. Attempts to redefine hack as it applies to writers of fiction can only be wasted effort. The word has become too closely associated with computer use and new terminology is growing up to describe a new kind of writing: ââ¬Å"Hacker journalistsâ⬠are computer programmers who assume roles as journalists in order to affect social change. Unlike the traditional hack writer who writes only for monetary gain, ââ¬Å"hacker journalistsâ⬠pursue non-monetary rewards and seek personal fulfillment through moral interventionism. - ââ¬Å"Muckraking in the Digital Age: Hacker Journalism and Cyber Activism in Legacy Media,â⬠by Bret Schulte, and Stephanie Schulte, Mediac, The Journal of New Media and Culture, Volume 9, Issue 1) I guess weââ¬â¢ll just have to come up with a new term for ââ¬Å"an unimaginative writer who will write any kind of drivel for money.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Why I Want To Become a Nurse Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Why I Want To Become a Nurse - Essay Example Hence, I believe that adopting nursing as a profession will not only provide me with my dream job, but would also enable me to polish myself as a human being. I chose to apply in the FHCHS Nursing Program for several reasons. Firstly, FHCHS is located at a distance of hardly ten minutes from my home as I live in Orlando. Secondly, FHCHS is one of very few medical centers that can provide their students with sound clinical experience because of its intrinsic association with the Florida Hospital. There may be other nursing schools with links with hospitals but I chose to apply in FHCHS in particular because of the global fame and recognition of the Florida Hospital and this Hospital being the biggest of above 350 facilities of healthcare all over the world that the Seventh-day Adventist Church has to operate. The mere idea of gaining practical experience of learning and working in the Florida Hospital fascinates me. Last but not the least, teachings and ways of this faith-based institution are consistent with my religious beliefs. I would not think of other institutions when I have got world-class education and experience at few paces from my home! I am very good at socializing with people. I am an extrovert. These qualities make me a very good nurse. I have always wanted to have a large social circle and a big network of friends. The level of association and the kind of rapport a nurse enjoys with his/her patients is conducive for long-term association between the two. Nurses can find best friends in their patients because they get an opportunity to attach to them on an emotional level. Thus, I would be making lots of friends as I work more. I want to do a lot of social work in my life. If I can bring a smile on a face with my sweet words and care, that makes my day! Nursing is one profession that would allow me to achieve that because I would be able to work for humanity. I believe that having an

Laboratory 4 Report ( HMST 2530 ) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Laboratory 4 Report ( HMST 2530 ) - Essay Example nvolved an assessment of the effects of practice with the dominant hand on the performance in tracing the star through a mirror view with the non-dominant hand. The results indicated that the practice group performed better than the control group. Overall, the data suggest that the means of training may impact the learning processes associated with the acquisition of fine motor skills. The study of motor control involves an empirical assessment of the neurological factors critical to the acquisition of motor skills. The development of motor skills requires the ability to execute learned movements toward a directed result. This process requires learning. Skills require accuracy and the ability to execute motor functions in a controlled fashion. The study of motor behaviour involves an attempt to ascertain the mechanism by which motor skills are produced. This area encompasses motor development, control and learning. Fine motor skills require little actual movement but require precision and control of fine muscle activities involving the manipulation of tools or objects. The experiments conducted in this laboratory practicum have explored principles of fine motor control in an experimental setting to assess critical factors associated with learning new fine motor skills. Skilled motor performance requires an organized sequence of movements associated with temporal organization. Other components of fine motor skills include accuracy and consistency of performance to produce purposeful activity. Learning may be defined as a change in behaviour that results from experience and practice; it is not an innate behavour. Learning is generally assessed by evaluating changes in performance. Performance may be defined as observable behaviour. Important measurements of learning include rate of response, error, reminiscence, and trials. The most important assessment tool of learning is retention, which involves the ability to perform after a period in which no

The Relationship between Partner Abuse and Welfare Recipients Essay
The Relationship between Partner Abuse and Welfare Recipients - Essay Example A snapshot of the target group in New York compared to the target group in California had only one major difference: Ethniticity. This most probably is because of demographic differences between the regions. This issue is so important because it involves considerable suffering and oppression to a select segment of the population of the United States. Other countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom have similar issues. This study focused on communities within the United States. It is noteworthy that the problems of our poor are the source of much worry in other countries as well. Abuse is cyclical. Children are prone to repeat behaviors modeled by their parents. Children in environments that witness domestic violence are very prone to repeat that behavior in their adult homes. There has been much research that shows that boys who witness domestic violence will grow up to be abusive toward their families, wives, or domestic partners. According to Helpguide.org "Children who witness domestic violence may develop serious emotional, behavioral, developmental, or academic problems. As children, they may become violent themselves, or withdraw. Some act out at home or school; others try to be the perfect child. Children from violent homes may become depressed and have low self-esteem. Welfare reform - changes is welfare laws such as the require... Attempt suicide. Use and abuse drugs. Commit crimes, especially sexual assault. Become abusers in their own relationships later in life." To understand this issue one must be familiar with the terms of welfare and domestic violence that the social services industry uses most commonly. The terms most used in the article are: Partner on partner abuse - spousal abuse, domestic partner abuse, boyfriend or girlfriend abuse, older child on younger Welfare - public assistance provided to low/no income family units. It can be in the form of money, housing, food stamps, childcare, etc Domestic violence - any violence that takes place in the home between family members. This violence or abuse can take the form of physical, sexual, mental, emotional abuse or deprivation. Welfare reform - changes is welfare laws such as the requirement that welfare recipients work to receive benefits, time limits on eligibility (5 years in Ohio), and benefit amounts not increased upon the birth of an additional child. Changes in the welfare laws were designed to encourage recipients to get off welfare. Welfare reform is designed to change the usage of benefits back to their original intention-as temporary assistance during hard times vs. a subculture of benefit users that pass on to the next generation the idea that benefits are an entitlement. Further definitions will be provided as they occur in this paper. The reader must also understand that although most partner abuse is man on woman many cases of woman on man abuse takes place as well. Sadly, as children from violent or abusive homes grow up they are prone to duplicate the abuse in their homes. This could take place as older child on younger or older child on parent. The theoretical or

The Process of Making a Simple Metallic Water Bucket Essay Example for Free
The Process of Making a Simple Metallic Water Bucket Essay While there are many designs of water buckets in the market made of either plastic or metal, there is the universal design that manufactures tend to use with modifications put in order to create a distinction between this manufacturer and the others. This universal design is the V-shaped bucket, which has got the bottom circumference slightly smaller than the top circumference. Those made of plastic may have or may not have a lid, but the metallic ones do not have lids unless in extreme cases. In a metal-work workshop there are dangerous tools and materials which can cause fatal injuries if the proper safety precautions are not adhered to; therefore one should carefully follow the instructions -that govern the use of any tool. The procedure of making a simple metallic bucket may vary from one manufacturer to another but generally it involves four stages namely; (1) Measurement and Marking stage; (2) Cutting stage; (3) Folding stage, and; (4) Joining Stage. In the MEASUREMENT stage, the correct sizes of the parts that make up the bucket i. e. the bottom part, the curved part that forms the body of a bucket, and the handle are measured and marked on metallic sheets. A metallic measuring tape, inside and outside calipers, and marking knife will be most appropriate tools used in this stage. The measured and marked parts are then carefully CUT using either a cold chisel or metal-work scissors depending on the density of the metal sheet. The next stage involves FOLDING of the cut pieces in order to prepare them for the final stage. Pliers, anvil, measuring tape, and metal-work hammer are the most appropriate tools in this stage. The folded metal pieces are then JOINED together using the most appropriate joint i. e. that is simple and can hold on for along time, double seamed joint may be preferred than riveted joint. The handle is also fixed at this stage; a curved handle may be used because it tends to resist breaking rather than that with edges. Assignment #2 Definition of abstract nouns Nouns to be defined: Loyalty, Bravery, Shyness, Faith. Loyalty: Human beings were created in the image of God, they were given the authority to subdue the earth and they were given rules that governed their relationship with God, among these rules were that they should not eat the fruits of the tree in the middle of the Garden of Eden. God expected them to be faithful (loyal) to him, however, they were deceived by the devil into eating the forbidden fruits and as a result they were heavily punished. In almost every activity we undertake are governed by rules and regulations which we are bound to follow, the Loyalty, devotion, dependent, honest or faithfulness to a cause, thing, person, or to the set rules ensures that we do not rub shoulders with the setting authority or even we do not get punished (suffer). The concept of loyalty is a crucial element of moral ethics that govern the lives of human beings, all the other virtues that makes up a morally upright human being has got their origin to loyalty. For instance, if one is loyal to his/her creator then definitely s/he will love others, help those with problems, respect others etc, in short s/he will be an all round person in regards i. e. being loyal to both earthly and heavenly rules. Jesus Christ asserted that no one should serve two masters at the same time, because s/he will end up loving the one more while hating the other, s/he will devote much time to the one and despise the other. [Mathew 6:24] He explained that serving two masters at the same time will lead to a state of double mindedness and therefore undermine loyalty to a cause. [James 4:8] This therefore forms the basis of loyalty; the very act of showing a hundred percent devotion, faithfulnessâ⬠¦ to a cause. Disloyalty is the opposite of loyalty; its meaning is therefore the complete opposite of the meaning of loyalty! Assignment #3 Comparing and Contrasting Soccer vs. Hockey Soccer or football is one of the oldest sports believed to have originated from the ancient Greece when young boys used to kick the bladders of slaughtered animals. [historyofsoccer. net/] On the other hand, Hockey, basically referred to as ââ¬Å"the ball and stick gameâ⬠was played since ancient times in diverse places like Egypt, Scotland, South America and Rome. [historyofhockey. net/] The two sport disciplines vary greatly in many aspects. Using the sequencing method of comparing and contrasting, these variances can be best depicted. Soccer is a sport that is played by eleven players using feet, head, chest and hands for a normal play duration of 90 minutes (divided in two halves of 45 minutes each), while hockey is played by eleven players using sticks, for normal match duration of 70 minutes ( divided in two halves of 35 minutes each). Soccer pitch is larger in size as compared to hockey pitch with measurements ranging from, 100-110m as length and 64-75m as width while hockey pitch measures 75m as length and 35m as width. Soccer ball is made of leather or synthetic material and it is filled with pressure while hockey has a cork that is small in size and it is made of hard material. Soccer players wear jerseys, shorts, shin guards, socks and boots with long studs with the goalkeeper wearing gloves in addition to those other attire, while in hockey a players jerseys, shorts, shin guards, socks and boots with short studs with goalkeeper wearing an helmet, chest guard, loin guard, shin guards, gloves, and large plastic footwear as the extra protective attire. Whereas kicking of the ball is one of the major skills in a game of soccer, in hockey kicking of the cork is a gross violation except when done by a goalkeeper. In soccer aerial balls (passes) are allowed while in a game of hockey balls which are above the waist are considered as dangerous play and are usually penalized. Soccer is run by the FIFA (federation international de football association), while hockey is run by the FIH (federation of international hockey).
